I instantly remember why I leave other forums alone for ages when I happen to take a peak every now & then. And I really should know better but once again I've bitten. CW started a poll & a thread on OBOD forum about raging against christmas, returning it to it's pagan origins, have a low cost ethical replacement & the correct nativity portrayel etc etc blah blah I'm not a christian & really have no issues about christmas. I really don't want to see it removed either. Am I in a minority? Here's the link to put things in perspective: druidry.org/board/dhp/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=34688&st=0&sk=t&sd=a

why doesn't he just join the Scientologists and leave us all alone?
Actually, imo, pagans should be encouraging Christmas! I love a bit of carol singing. I love the sound of church bells on Christmas morning. I love me a tree and presents. What's wrong with that?
If it's a rage against commercialism, then fair enough. But "Christmas" is, and always was, a time for over indulgence and gifts. Anyone who knows the history of the thing will really see no conflict between the Christian and Pagan traditions at this time, because they are the same.

Hear hear. Mind you, you can't stop someone just being a tosser. heh ;D Though I can't quite work out just what stops him from managing to tip over the edge into half decent ironic humour... now, if Bill Bailey or Dave Gorman did it...

The difference between CW & Mr Bailey, is that CW wasn't trying to be ironic or even attempt satire but just some self rightous bollocks!

At least it's giving him something to do, poor bastard. May as well declare war on cheese.

I don't really understand it. CW used to be a nice person, many years back we used to correspond by email, but he seems to have gome all Fundamentalist for some reason.
I really can't see why he feels the need to put his blood-pressure up by posting such silly stuff, and yes, it is slanted towards his way of thinking. If you answer the poll at all, you fall into his trap.
I feel sorry for him, and I wonder what made him change?
Cheers, Midori

Had a look at the first page of the thread, then skipped to the end. Can't be arsed with the stuff in the middle. Blah!

You're right, Potia & I know I should know better to ignore such stuff, it's my own fault & now dragged some of you into it too. The usual thing has started again, extracting word for word to draw me in & I've resisted ... so far, anyway. It's just I don't get what the big deal is between many neo-pagans & christmas!

I see it as an opportunity to be festive much longer. I've been learning new carols for the harp to play for family and friends, some of them with quite "Christian" lyrics, but those were just plastered on far older tunes. I love the early music. The vitriol towards commercialism is well understood, but some extravagance is completely acceptable, after all. Isn't that what feasting is all about? I'm so glad I've stopped reading the OBOD forum for a while again.

CW is playing on the whole "burning times/Christianity is bad/they've hijcked our festival" thing. And I'm sure some Christian groups in the US are akin to Nazis..... But our local vicar is a lovely bloke, who works really hard for the local kids and just to keep a roof on his church. More power to him. If some yobs were wrecking his nativity they'd have me to answer to (he'd be likely to turn the other cheek, whereas I am a pagan so not so forgiving lol)
It's Saturnalia/Eponalia/Mithras/Solstice/Sol Invictus/Christmas, lets leave out all the pettyness and just get along!
Now I'm going to find the Quality Street tin before my daughter scoffs them all...

I refuse to look at OBOD these days (blood pressure), but I wonder if CW isn't actually just a bit disturbed. he obviously has some problems.
Talking of Christmas, my friend Just and I are using this at our winter solstice ritual (you can take the boy out of paganism...)
Laurie Lee, 'Christmas Landscape'.
Tonight the wind gnaws With teeth of glass, The jackdaw shivers In caged branches of iron, The stars have talons.
There is hunger in the mouth Of vole and badger, Silver agonies of breath In the nostril of the fox, Ice on the rabbit’s paw.
Tonight has no moon, No food for the pilgrim; The fruit tree is bare, The rose bush a thorn And the ground is bitter with stones.
But the mole sleeps, and the hedgehog Lies curled in a womb of leaves, The bean and the wheat-seed Hug their germs in the earth And the stream moves under the ice.
Tonight there is no moon, But a new star opens Like a silver trumpet over the dead. Tonight in a nest of ruins The blessed babe is laid.
And the fir tree warms to a bloom of candles, The child lights his lantern, Stares at his tinselled toy; Our hearts and hearths Smoulder with live ashes.
In the blood of our grief The cold earth is suckled, In our agony the womb Convulses its seed, In the cry of anguish The child’s first breath is born.
