I have better uses for £125, be interesting to see if this thing raises either the money or interest it's hoping for.

Flag Fen archaeology idea brings in public to dig deep Crikey, that's cheeky! So not only do they save money by not hiring archaeologists, but they also fleece the general public at the same time. Traditionally, digs are often done with a largely (unpaid) volunteer force, something that also annoys some archaeologists that I know. However, it's a long standing practice and is fair enough given that many digs operate on a shoe string. I'd imagine that interested people would already be volunteering their time and would not be interested in paying for the same experience... Can't see this one taking off.

What is Stonehenge Worth?
This was a headline in today's Financial Times over a story that Government auditors have asked English Heritage to put a price on the things they look after. Simon Thurley of English Heritage feared that places like Stonehenge and other ancient monuments would be lumped together as 'fixtures and fittings' in the English heritage estate. Apparently the demand was resisted and although they still have to value some things like paintings and the like they have successfully argued that "applying a theme-park template would hardly have done justice to the ancient mystery of the stones". Auditors probably blinked in incomprehension at this, but the crunch arguments as far as they were concerned was that the cost of doing the valuation "would have outweighed its value as disclosure". Quite so.

Typical of the political authorities today, they can only relate to things in a purely monetry sense, notice how news reports always use monetry values as the baseline to qualify and quantify.
