I wish it was called something else, for some reason every time I read the title of this thread I have a vague memory of an inapropriate Alex Harvey song running through my brain...

Hi Stephen,
You know that I am generally pro-farmer. However, I do stand up when that unholy duality DEFRA and the NFU get up on their hind legs like something out of an Orwell novel and ally themselves with all manner of dubious sources for their propaganda.
Take this quote from Keith Porteous Wood, executive director of the National Secular Society: "The consequences of going the other way and the bull potentially infecting the national herd and the massive financial consequences of that for people's lives, and indeed potentially people's health, are just unthinkable."
This is just scaremongering, but it was reported without comment by the BBC. There was no way that an isolated and pampered pet bull was ever going to infect the National Herd. The National Herd is already infected from muzzle to tail with a range of conditions including TB. Where does this moron think Shambo got TB from? Kali?
The NFU has made it clear it would be happy to see the extinction of every wild source of TB and other diseases in order to protect its members' livelihoods. Perhaps vegetarianism will get to them before they get to our native species...

not only that, the Farmers Union are calling for the culling of all the other animals on the Monks' site now. How far are they going to take it? Extermination of wood-lice?

I think they're after the culling of the other cattle not the bunnies, ducks, swans, pheasants, fish, sheep, goats and deer not to mention Vali the elephant. I haven't been there for a couple of months but hope to go again before too long.
