Proboards have just warned me that this board is due for an upgrade - so if it behaves strangely over the next few days or disappears for a while, it will just be them tinkering with it

we should move it to a Brython server really. Trouble is, there is no way of moving the threads from a Proboard forum. (without breaking the TOS, anyway)

***sound of technospeak going over the head of a thick bird***
I'm afraid coding a forum is completely beyond me, and the ready made packages seem very expensive...
The plan is to have two fora, this one remaining as a public-ish non members board, while the more indepth Brython discussion will happen on a separate, password protected area of the Brython site. (One of the main problems we've had with the hosting companies is that they don't all support bb/php (but don't tell you that in advance))

if the server supports PHP, then it should be able to run PhpBB. Just because they don't support it, doesn't mean you can't use it, you just have to endulge in DIY.
There are three common types of server service. HTML (basic web pages), PHP (linux scripted) and ASP (windows scripted). If your server is either of the latter, you can run forums on it (as long as you have 1 or more SQL databases). If it is a basic page service, you can't.
Some hosting companies who provide PHP servers have a "1-click install" of PHPbb or similar through their control panel. If you have a PHP server that "doesn't support PHPbb", this just means that it's not available in 1-click, and you can't phone them for advise. Doesn't mean you can't use it.
OK, babbling now, stop me...

Be careful Teg, it's a dangerous thing to admit to being knowledgable over interwebby things in my vicinity ....

(without breaking the TOS, anyway) I couldn't see anything in their (proboard's) current TOS that prohibit it, though I may well be looking in the wrong place, but www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=727865
