It is thought that the dolman was erected around 3,900 BC and used until around 2,000 BC. The rear slab at the back, with it's "crook" engravings is thought to be older than the dolman itself. It is thought once, to be part of the Menhirs of the locality, erected around 4,500 BC. It is classed as a shield idol, a framed representation of divinity. The ceiling is one of three parts of a single menhir which was thought to have stood around at least 14 metres in length, the second part was used as the ceiling for the Er Grah tumulus, situated a few hundred metres away and the last piece is situated 4 km away at the Gavrinis dolman, on an island in the bay of Morbihan. The dolman was excavated and rebuilt in the 1990's after lying in a ruined state for centuries, what a brilliant job they have done!! RR

Wonderfull!! I've visited the site at Locmariaquer years ago, and was blown away by this tumulus as well. In the neighbourhood of the village, and everywhere in the Auray area, there are also many 'wild' dolmens, tumuli and other megalithic monuments. If you keep your eyes open, you stumble on the every time you move. But this is one of the best....My boyfriend and I plan to visit the Gavrinis site when the tourist season is over, I'm very much looking forward to it, neither of us has seen it as yet Your pictures are great, too, you have a talented eye!!
