Cheers, Midori

We've had snow on even the lowest pasture for three weeks now. No grass to be seen means we're getting through our hay very fast - too fast. March might be a bit tricky unless the weather changes soon.
I was breaking up bales of hay full of dried knapweed flowers yesterday - normally these are saved until later for lambing - there was no wind and the scent was wonderful. It really felt like feeding 'summer sun'... 'though after a while my cold wet feet suggested otherwise!

Temperatures in Glasgow still warmer than they were and a lot of the snow has melted in the city itself. We live on the outskirts of the city and still have a fair amount of snow on the ground but we are beginning to see the odd patch of green appearing.
Some areas are seeing increasing problems with burst pipes now and potholes have increased in many roads. There's also problems with icy patches in some places.
More snow is forecast but not in high amounts here. Higher areas will probably get more.
Hope you all continue to stay safe and warm.

We've had another couple of inches over night, so school is closed again. Even the kids are getting fed up now, I had a mutiny this morning when I suggested sledging again

this is awesome, i hope winters are like this more often I'd love it too if winters were consistently like this. Atlantic seaboard year round warm wet mists sometimes seem a lot less attractive than sharp dramatically different continental seasons- but maybe the grass is always greener and I'd miss the low clouds and green green summers! This winter's caught me on the hop though - kept too many beasts and made too little hay. Almost four weeks of them only eating stuff I've hauled out to them means thin times ahead. I expect many ewes carrying twins will probably only have singles now and add that to having to buy in extra food (at a time when everyone needs it, and so market forces will be pushing the price up). I think having snow lie on the ground for so long even at sea level has probably cost me around £2000 all told - which makes a very big difference to my family this year. Makes me really think what the effect of an unexpectedly harsh winter must have had in the past - how much it must have been feared. You'd placate whatever you thought held such a winter in its gift at even very high cost. As has been suggested here before though I have a feeling it wouldn't be an act of devotion though - more an unavoidable 'insurance' cost, in the same category as paying tribute to a local warlord for the opportunity to farm in peace under his protection - you 'pay' a similarly unavoidable 'tax/insurance' to the Power that holds the snows and winter famine in its gift.

Starting to thaw here. Tried to get to woods twice. Once i got there to find myself stuck,, dug myself out and went home. Had to fix the deer fence because the snow pulled it down. The second time i can not get to the gate, I can't wait to get a 4x4.

Now the snow has suddenly gone, the green looks really strange! Exactly how I felt. Today was very strange - very warm weather, sunshine, blue sky and blackbirds singing courting songs - I felt out of time and place all day - very weird!
