I've recently read an interesting essay on the role of magic and witchcraft in Gaelic cultures, and it got me wondering about the survival of Brythonic folk traditions that could be seen as 'magical'. Do we know of any? And if so, are they utilised in anyway in your religious practices today? I suppose I'm wondering what role, if any, does magic play in a modern Brythonic practice? www.gaolnaofa.com/docs/gaolnaofa_witchcraftmagic.pdfThanks!

Thanks for the link! If you can find a copy of ' Cunning folk and familiar spirits' by Emma Wilby you might find it interesting. There are certainly lots of folk practises you can track down if you go looking. Cornish folk customs are an easy place to start but now doubt you'll find all sorts of folk practises from all over. In East Anlgia where my interest lies there's the fact that there was also the anglo-saxon presence and I'll never really know where my local folk practises originate. But I've found for me that that doesn't matter so much as I'm more concerned about relating to the place I'm in right now. For me personally magic doesn't really figure. But then I don't really do regular devotions and trying to do what my ancestors may or may not have done in the very distanct past any more. I tried that route, and while it's very fulfilling for others, I found it's not the way for me. For me I guess it's a sort of devotional act trying to learn as much as I can about the iron age in Britain and the early anglo-saxon period. I find more connection from learning and getting out in the landscape than I do from trying to practise regular devotions or practise of magic. Sometimes It will feel appropriate to do something that I might have read about in folk practises or folk stories... But only if it seems like a natural thing to do, never because I think that's what I should be doing to follow a certain spiritual path. And honestly it doesn't often feel natural to me, and we're all different!

Magic is one of the things some of us chatted about during one of the gatherings we had. We didn't really come to any conclusions about it and in terms of practice there was a wide range of both experience and interest even with such a small group of us.
There's nothing that all of us do in terms of magical practice. Some of us use or have used shamanic style techniques, some modern Wiccan techniques, some have used divination in varying ways.

I'm curious myself about that. Magic isn't something that figures in to my practices. However, it would certainly be interesting to learn about Brythonic folk magic. Although, I'm sure there isn't much on it. I would assume looking into any Welsh and Cornish folk magic, then, maybe, whatever they have in common, would have a possibility of being from the ancient Brythons. That is just a guess, though.
