I typed this story out a short while ago. I thought I'd share it with all of you.
The Creation of the World
In the abyss of the Universe, our world was not yet born. No Sky above, no Sea beyond, no Land around us. No man. No Gods. No life at all. The Otherworld did exist, however, as it always had. Yet, something felt missing. A void in the hearts of the Gods. Along with a desire to create.
The Gods are immortal. Whilst living in the Otherworld, only the beasts and creatures of the Otherworld could die. Many were slain to create a home for the Gods. Not all of the creatures were evil, and did battle with the foulest of the creatures that dwelled upon the realm. These creatures were spared from the Gods’ wrath.
The Gods watched these creatures do battle to protect those they loved. They watched pain, grief and loss. Yet they also saw love, bravery in the face of incredible odds, compassion, and hope. Seeing this made the Gods wonder: What if there were another world? A world where mortal souls would roam? Where those who proved themselves worthy could walk with the Gods? Those who succumbed to evil would have to contend with foul and savage beasts?
The Gods spent much time in debate and discourse on whether or not this would be a good idea. By the end of the discussion, the Gods arrived at a stalemate. Except for three: Sucellus, Tigernonos, and Taranis. The three decided to go forth and create a New World.
Sucellus, took his hammer in hand, and struck into the void, creating land. With this, he sent many of the beasts of the Otherworld into this new world. Large and small, the beasts made their way to this new and mysterious place. Although some of the stronger beasts did offer resistance, Sucellus prevailed, and many of the beasts, defeated, continued into the New World.
At this time, Sucellus also created a unique creature. One that as of yet, had not been seen in the Otherworld. This creature was Man, with whom he gave all of the emotions that could possibly be felt. The only thing he did not give them, was immortality within their human bodies. He marvelled at his creation, and marvelled at the Land. When he created the Land, however. There were deep chasms…
Tigernonos saw this as his opportunity. The largest chasms of which, Tigernonos filled with the Seas. Made to be large, deep, and foreboding, with forceful tides. Yet, also times where the massive waters were gentle. Attributes he gave the Sea to give it life, his response to Sucellus, and his creation of Man. As an aside, he also provided water for Man to drink.
Following his creation of the Sea, he felt it fit that the Sea, too, hold life, as the Land did. So, he took to the Sea of the Otherworld, plucking fish from it, and tossing them down, one by one, into the Seas of this New World. Some of these creatures of the Sea were incredibly heavy, He heaved them into the Seas with all of his might. Then, as he felt he had thrown in enough, he took pause.
Taranis saw that all eyes were upon him. He looked back, then down, to see the Creation before him. Seeing that Man had water to drink, beasts to eat, he pondered that Man ought also have air to breathe. So, Taranis exhaled his breath throughout the New World. With this, he created the air we breathe. His breath, perpetual, inhaling and exhaling, created the wind we feel to this day.
As he did this, he sent many winged creatures from the Otherworld to the New World. Though they would need ground to rest, they would spend much of their time soaring in the air. However, Taranis noticed that his breath would not hold, nor would the New World, for long, without a Sky. So, Taranis created the Sky. Keeping his breath alive, and keeping the winged creatures from returning to the Otherworld in life.
Within the Sky, he created the clouds. He also saw the Sky as a means to demonstrate his power, reminding Man of the power of the Gods. One of the reasons he occasionally sends bolts and flashes of lightning, followed by the roar of thunder for which he is known. The storms also rage whenever he engages in battle in the Otherworld, at this time, he also swore to become protector to those that sought him.
With the beauty of the Sky, he also decided there must be a Sun for warmth, but that sometimes clouds must cover it. There must be a time of cold, along with a time of heat. Thus he created the Seasons in this New World.
At this time, other Gods stepped in. Greatly impressed with the creation of this New World, they decided there are things that Sucellus, Tigernonos, and Taranis forgot. At this time, they decided to take action.
Cernunnos, seeing as Man was protected and watched over, decided that the beasts needed to be as well. However, also decided that Man needed sustenance, due to this, he embedded within the First Men the knowledge to hunt. Also how to use the hides of fallen beasts to make clothing, as he saw the nakedness of man, to aid him in protection from the elements.
Matrona, seeing that much of the Otherworld was green and lush, with forests and fields of grass and crops, decided that the New World ought be gifted with these things as well. Taranis interrupted at this point. Making rain fall upon the ground, leaving it soft. Then, he made lightning strike the Land. Making the ground fertile. After this, Matrona planted the first seeds. She also made some of the water on the Land move, and flow, creating rivers, leaving some still, what we now know as lakes.
Rigantona watched Man sometimes having trouble getting to their destinations. So, she taught them to tame, ride, and care for horses. Seeing how with that, Man had much more free roam over the Land, they were beginning to form Tribes. Rigantona feared that these Men would forget their relationship to the Land, and the Gods. She made it so that the Chieftains of all of the Tribes, wed to her when they assumed their new title.
Brigantia, watched over the homes of these Men. Gave them the knowledge of how to light fires, ensuring that at any one time, somewhere in the New World there would be a flame lit. She also embedded in Man that a husband must treat his wife with respect, or face her wrath. She also made sure that stars dotted the night, so that Man could always find their way home to a warm hearth. She also embedded in Man that the owner of the hearth must be welcoming to guests,
Lugus gifted Man with the many skills needed for survival and daily life. How to build homes, how to craft art, and work metal. He gifted them with the ability to build monuments to the Gods, that also kept the time of the Solstices. He gifted Man with knowledge of the harvest, and when it was time to reap that which was sown. Few amongst the many skills with which he gifted Man. His gifts ultimately ensured Man’s survival.
Maponos gifted man with the verses, and songs. He gave Man the creative spark, that is responsible for beautiful songs and poems. He granted the young the youthful spirit, so that they may have the strength and inspiration to change the world. Along with these gifts, the ability to tell the great stories of the deeds of the Gods, and of heroes of great renown.
With this, the Gods marvelled at this New World. Comprised of the Three Realms of Land, Sea, and Sky. To this day, the Gods sometimes play part in their Creation. They sometimes intervene for, or against Man. In return, Man attempts to connect to, and understand the Gods.
The three Creator Gods: Sucellus, Tigernonos, and Taranis. The Three who watch the realms. With the patience of immortality, they and all Gods, watch over Man. Sometimes blessing, sometimes cursing. Always awaiting the calls of the worthy. In this life, as well as the next.
