I was wondering how many people here are active/practising/wannabe musicians? Us types are supposed to be creative so let's see. In the words of Mr. David Lee Roth, "raise it up, let's see who salutes baby".
I'll start: I'm a guitarist of 20odd years. Playing wise I have an intriguing style of funky rhythm, blues lead and thrash metal riffing. Kind like Chic meets Stevie Ray Vaughn meets Pantera, or a pissed off Red Hot Chilli Peppers kinda thang. Odd really. I also used to do guitar tech/roadie stuff for bands when I was active in that scene. Basically I love guitars, and if I'm not thinking about what colour trousers an insignificant character in an obscure myth was wearing, I'm probably thinking about guitars.
Hopefully those of us who are musos can help each other out with gear advice, playing style lessons etc etc. Let's see if we can get some kind of a collective thing going on. I also plan on starting similar threads for other arts, so if you have a suggestion let me know.

I play the penny-whistle and didgerioo* (actually playing for over an hour at a time, not just getting a toot out of it). I've taught loads of people how to play the olde didge. Apparently, the Carnyx is played in a similar way, although at over £1000 for a Carnyx (if I could find someone to make me one) I haven't tried yet. If anyone has one they can loan me I'll be happy to experiment * (yeah, I was a crusty a long time ago)

As you all probably know, I play the harp (if anyone trots out the old line about 'not harping on about it', murder may be committed...) ;D I also sing and play low D whistle in a very amateurish way. I've just got hold of the family fiddle too, so once I've restrung it, will be seeing if I can remember how to play

My musical career ended at school after a very squeaky three blind mice on the recorder...and then my pet rat got out my bag and freaked out the teacher. I was chucked out of the class and sent home with a letter. My mum was very pleased as she didn't have to endure recorder practice any more! Partner plays bass in a Bill and Ted kind of a way...used to be a roadie for a metal band.

I used to play the piano and violin, both of which were abandoned at age 16. I am now trying to find someone to teach me the penny whistle and the bodhran. I miss being able to play music.

EDIT: Of course, the thing with that one is I don't know how long it is, a Carnyx would need to be about 4ft.

I sing at the drop of a hat (or maybe that should be at the drop of a rattle) and mainly folky or classical type of stuff I guess plus assorted chants.

Thanks Blackbird. BTW did I tell you I had received your wonderful CD? Your own compositions are fantastic and I want to learn to sing them especially Wind Song. Would that be ok with you?

Thank you, be my guest That one was written about Arbor Low, which we've been talking about recently. Anyone who's been up there will know that no matter what the weather down the hill, at the top, the wind is fierce. You can forget playing the harp up there, and not just because of frozen fingers - the wind plays it for you and the tunes that come through it are... interesting...

I sing, loudly, no - make that very loudly. Comes from having been brought up in a family full of brass banders and later being in a Welsh Male Voice Choir.

I play didje (circular breathing and stuff)... I like didje 'cos you don't get bum notes ;D... I strum guitar for my own pleasure and recently got my hands on a small harp which I'm learning painfully slowly, though I can improvise some nice sounds out of it
