Today the Woodland trust is launching Woodwatch: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/woodsunderthreat/Basically, it is calling on people to keep an eye on their local ancient woodlands, and report/take action if it is threatened by development. Definitely a worthy cause, and one we can all take part in.

Sounds good to me.
A few years ago a developer destroyed part of the wood above our village before anyone could stop him. He then learnt the fury a village can bring to bear when aroused by such a sacrilege...

Hopefully at the moment, there's not enough money in property for that type of thing to happen. It makes me see red... be it woodland, listed buildings that mysteriously 'go on fire'... all so that developers can make a load of cash, far in excess of any fines they might get for destroying something invaluable and irreplaceable.

My local wildlife group have been talking about the dangers of golf course expansion. Some of the local golf courses are putting in planning applications for conference facilities, wedding suites etc. in an effort to stave off the drop in green fees due to estate agents getting their come-uppance (well, not quite but I just love saying that). Since many courses are bounded by mature woodlands it is something to look out for.
The opencasters are being a pain in the whatnots as well, a new site has opened behind my house as the price of opencast coal is high enough to warrant opening up old workings again.
