Hi Everyone
I'm Beith, I have a general fascination with British traditions, especially pre-Roman and I am glad to find a site with a Welsh flavour for a change ;D
I am a Witch of 15 years and have no real tradition that I can speak of, just my own I suppose, it has a Celtic flavour, but I don't follow closely Celtic or Iron Age British history but I have a general interest in mythology and legends because I think it give insight to the human condition.
I am looking forward to learning and joining in the discussions on this board

Welcome Beith, great to have you here with us. I'd not thought of mythology in that way before Thinking about it, I connect with mythology because it connects me in turn with the land - ie. stories of places, and with my ancestors who would have shared those tales among themselves. Much of them speaks of our place in the world, so I suppose I feel that mythology gives me a place to stand.

What I find fascinating is the similarity between different myths and legends. It does give us a sense of place, and I recently went to a talk but a friend of mine about sacred places, saying to the effect, if you were a bard in Somerset, wanting to entertain, you would use places and people in the story that your audience was aware of. So it would be stories set in and arount Somerset. If, on the other hand you went up to Northumberland, and no-one ther knew of the Somerset localities, you would use the area that they knew to explain certain things. I think a lot of legends come from this sort of oral practise. I do astrology and am interested in psychology, so a lot of where I am coming from and how I understand things, is in archetypes and although I am aware that you just can't put people in boxes, there is a lot more to them I do find connections. (which may be spurious in the end ) BB Beith

Ah well, I'm not generally into archetype stuff I do agree, that there are definite themes which recur in the mythologies and folktales of many cultures and places. But still, some place lore is very specific... thinking of the Dindshenchas of Ireland, and tales of a similar nature from Wales. And then there are the songs and stories of the people of those places, which while they may have familiar themes, still tell us about those places and people because of the dialect words, local people featuring in them etc.
