LOL!!! Now you know where I get this stuff.
It's a great book---he's a foul-tempered, evil-smelling old goat though. he once cut my friend mel dead at a dinner, being really incredibly rude to her, so much so that it made her cry: only to send her an email the next day saying, 'I am sorry, my dear; I had mistaken you for somebody else entirely.'
Academia. It's just cheaper care in the community, sometimes.
Yes, like I say, a fine book. I would however say that I think (I have the book here) that he's a bit weak on Celtic things. I think the identification of Brigit with the I-E sun daughter is strained, and occasionally he trips up. (The welsh word for 'television' is 'telewele'? (p. 28)---it's not in GPC!).
But all in all, it's an AMAZING work of vast learning.

[.....]and, and occasionally he trips up. (The welsh word for 'television' is 'telewele'? (p. 28)---it's not in GPC!). I once heard this on a programme on S4C where it was used to suggest that the person addressed was being childish - some thing like 'does didums want to watch the tele-wele then'? So I suppose it is a possible construction which more literally translates 'television' than 'teledu' does. But certainly a mistake in that it would, I think, seem rather a twee construction to anyone speaking seriously.
