Branching off from the 'In Our Time' thread, and quoting Melvyn Bragg:
Merlin has been Myrddin and Lailokan and Merlinus and Ambrosius and even Melvyn, we think that these are Dark Age or Medieval confusions and perhaps indicators of the uncertainty of the reality of Merlin.
Do people here go along with Melvyn (do you think he flatters himself?!) here? Or would you say that Lailoken and Ambrosius are independent characters who simply became merged with Myrddin? Most authors I've read suggest that Lailoken is the original rather than vice versa, aside from Nikolai Tolstoy - I'll dig out what he has to say on Lailoken shortly.
