i am trying to get hold of rachel bromwich's Culhwch ac olwen.
there seem to be two books by that title.
there is th Culhwch ac Olwen: arthurian tale etc and Culhwch ac Olwen: a glossary.
am i right in thinking they go together and compliment each other
anybody have either book? what are they like?
any mention of a pig cult? Culhwch as aeuhemerized pig god (cant think of the gaulish pig god... moch** something)?
hell, anyone fancy posting a sysnopsis of the book?
cheers

Rachel Bromwich's book is a scholarly edition of the tale done in conjunction with someone else whose name escapes me and I can't put my hand on my copy. But it's an edition of the original text with all the scholarly apparatus with notes and glossary and a long introduction. I think the other version you have seen might be a parallel version with the text in English.

it's culhwch ac olwen and culhwch and olwen - the latter is an english edition of the book which she and d simon evans originally wrote in welsh. Both present the welsh text with scholarly business, as heron says. The god should have been *moccus or *moccos, etymologically, which just means 'pig'!

on the translation of 'cul' as slim is interesting. especially if it is taken to mean young. older boars/pigs being broad beasts and all.
brings a new context to the boar hunt

if thats the case then it opens up the possibility of there being a myth surrounding Culhwch being sired by a pig god and then going off to kill the old boar to assume his crown. so to speak.
