Hello there and welcome to Caer Feddwyd I've used the Teach Me series for learning Welsh, there's a link on the Links page of the site. It's a CD rom that is a pronounce and repeat/see and copy type thing, with lessons on grammar and vocab. The lessons are only about 10 minutes long, so it's easy to fit in.

I would like to learn Welsh have tried the BBC site and found it very confusing so any advice re: a good starting point for a total beginner would be much appreciated. Helo If you want to learn Welsh to read myths and legends you'll need to learn Middle Welsh (for The Mabinogi) and delve further back still to Old Welsh (actually a bit easier!) for The Gododdin etc. That's a process of learning to read. Most Welsh courses available, of course, aim to get you speaking modern Welsh as a first priority. In the long term the ideal might be to to both. But you'll never be speaking Welsh if you don't know any Welsh speakers, so the traditional approach of working at texts with a glossary and a grammar, with recourse to an accurate translation, might be the best bet. Even if you end up reading most of it from the translation, the bits you pick up from the original can give you a good feel for the way it was originally written down (itself a later process than composition in m ost cases). Pob lwc

I've just started reading The Mabinogion Jones and Jones translation it's the first time I've read this version. Welsh speakers mmmm Skype and the like could be useful!
