Sorry to sound really thick... why is the grey mare so important to us in the brython tradition? Ive tried to get a definitive answer online but its a bit tenuous. Rigatona, Rhiannon, Epona, Grey Mare... all the same deity? Or different? My head hurts...can anyone help?

It would be better to build your relationship with her and see how you feel.

Hi Crowman
I thinnk that there are many different reasons why the Grey Mare has become so important to Brython as a whole. One of the reasons is that she is important to many of the individuals that are part of Brython.
As to the question of whether they are the same deity. At one stage I would have said no and now I think yes. Truth is I'm not sure it really matters as I have come to understand that the being that responds to those names and titles for me is the same each time even if for others a different being responds to each name.
If you can develop your own relationship with her that is the best way but I am sure that those of us for whom this being is important will do our best to answer any questions you may have as to why.

Thanks for your replies, sorry if i appear impatient, i'll tell you why... i went for a walk on Dartmoor yesterday, one of my favourite places. The route i took was new to me, because of the risk of ice i decided not to park at my usual place. Before i began the walk i stated the intention to reconnect with the ancestors and maybe receive a message. Walking up the first tor i felt an exhilaration, the positioning of the hill and the sunlight on the frost directly in front of me felt like i was walking to heaven! Everything semed to have new meaning for me, even the wind seemed to whisper in my ear. Part way round i lost the track and began heading for boggy ground. A hawk swooped low over me and landed a few feet away to my left. I stopped and looked at it and it watched me back. Deciding not to startle it i continued to walk away from it to the right. Again the hawk took off, and landed just in front of me to my left. This happened three times before it flew off. Had i followed it to the left i would have refound the path instead and avoided the boggy ground which my map bearing was taking me on. Id decided to take a look at a stone row and cist which was almost at the end of my route. As i rounded the base of a hill to approach it on the path grazing was a single grey dartmoor pony....a mare. Its herd was some way off and she was alone. As i approached she looked at me but was unconcerned. She allowed me to get nearer and nearer. I sat down to watch her thrilled at seeing such a beautiful creature up close. I took a picture of her when i was quite literally slapped across the face at the realisation that this was a grey mare. With that she whinnyed, turned, shook her lovely long mane and ran off towards the stone row. I was in tears at the beauty of the situation. The stone row was amazing i had a heightened feeling of reconnection, ritual and ceremony. Obviously still in the modern age but i felt i was walking the moor as it was 2000 years ago. I felt both nostalgic and sad that we've been allowed to lose this connection. On arriving home i tried searching for the grey mare online but apart from a a few brief mentions it didnt inform me why the grey mare is connected to rigatona. She's already had a profound effect on me!

this will be a shortish response; to me the grey mare is Her, the landsape. not the goddess of the land or earth as it were, more a representation of it. if that makes sense? Rhiannon, Rigantona, Epona... whichever name works best, the important bit to me is that it is Her. sounds like some one to a message to you up on that moorland.

Sounds like you have had a Grey Mare experience. Like Lee said a connection to the land. I always have visions of her making those distinct horse shoe foot prints on the land.

Hi Crowman
Maybe this is the sort of thing you are looking for? The name Epona literally means Divine Mare and her attributes are linked to sovereignty. White or grey has always been considered sacred as I am sure you know. The tales of Rhiannon link her to riding a grey or white mare and the name is a modern version of Rigantona which means Great Queen. Then there is also the Uffington Horse figure.
It seems to me that you have met her and now you are trying to work out that means. You may never really know but it sounds like a truly wonderful experience.

Oh i feel i know it was her portia it really was like a slap round the face, its had such a profound effect on me in ways that are still revealing themselves to me now. When i joined caer feddwyd i was overjoyed to have found a group who feel the same as i do about our ancestors, curious thing is up until this week i never knew you existed. They say things happen for a reason well things are happening alright... i asked for a message and im getting it loud and clear! Ive decided to spend the next year in refining what i believe and how i recognise the passing of the seasons along with deities and gods that are important to me. I think a year long journal is probably the best way to go about this. Obviously the grey mare has shown herself, this got me thinking...how did other members arrive at the deities that are important to them? I read somewhere within this forum about possibly celebrating taranis in august... have we got any closer to formulating our celebrations, feast days and beliefs as a community?
