The story of Gwyn, Gwythyr and Creiddylad may be one of our oldest Brythonic seasonal myths. Its focus is the battle fought between Gwyn (a 'Winter King') and Gwythyr (a 'Summer King') for Creiddylad (a maiden associated with the land, fertility and spring) every May Day. Creiddylad spends summer with Gwythyr in this-world and winter with Gwyn in Annwn, the Brythonic underworld. A significant part of this story is Gwyn's abduction of Creiddylad and her transition from maiden to Queen of Annwn. This article explores this story's themes and background and neglected origins in the Old North. I'm currently working on a narrative poem based on it as part of Guests of the Earth alongside poet Nicolas Guy Williams and storyteller Peter Dillon to perform at Chorley, What's Your Story? on Saturday the 25th of April. lornasmithers.wordpress.com/2015/04/12/gwyn-gwythyr-and-creiddylad-a-story-from-the-old-north/I'd be interested to hear from other people who connect with this myth and how they do so and also other personal interpretations.

I'd be happy for this to re-posted on the Dun Brython website around Calan Mai if you would like to use it?
