Oh, BTW, is it just me, or does anyone else think that the character Xena was based on Scathac? I mean, she has all the characteristics-the leaping and yelling, etc. Not like any Greek goddess I'm aware of. Just wondering.....

I'd not thought of that! She might well be ;D Though there might be a touch of the Amazon in there too...
Did you know that Mathonwy (as in Math ap Mathonwy) is also a female name? So most of the characters in that tale have their mothers' names. In addition, it is interesting that it is Arianrhod's priviliege to name and arm Lleu.

You noticed that too I get really irritated at the assumption in a lot of the books old & new that Mathonwy is male, when its pretty obvious that the other men in the family are identified by their mother and the inheritance matrilinal. Which I've always considered part of the reason its so important for Gwydion that Arianrhod recognises Lleu
