Does anyone know anything about this text? I heard it was a hoax... but I've not been able to find much about it online and would like to know more.

I have a copy from Llanerch publishers - the text of 'The Physicians of Myddfai' as first published in 1861. It supposedly comes down from the original Physicians of the 12th century. The frontspiece says 'Of the medical practice of the celebrated Rhiwallon and his sons, of Myddvai, in Caermarthenshire... from ancient MSS in the libraries of Jesus College, Oxford, Llanover and Tonn...' so it should be easy enough to verify - just phone up Jesus College library and ask if they have such a thing I'd recommend getting the book from Llanerch, it's a fascinating read, authentic or not

Many thanks for those I don't have time to do them justice at the moment - but I'll take a look through them soon. I find this very interesting too - if the manuscripts are genuine, then there's an amazing continuity to the Physicians practice. Keeping an open mind on this one for now.

It's weird timing, because I have a friend from Wales that I met on another forum who was just asking me about this very subject last week. She was asking if I was familiar with it, and I told her I had run across the story before, and was of the opinion that it was local folklore probably based on real persons, not a hoax. It's a great story!

This is a local myth where I live. Myddfai is just a few miles the far side of Llandovery from me.
For anyone in the area I will be doing a historical display themed on healing at the National Botanic Gardens of Wales in May (think its about the 23rd). More details nearer the time.

Oooh, great! I doubt I'll be able to make it over, though, it's a long way from Nottingham, and a busy time of year for me.
Are you using the Physicians text as a source for the display? (I'd love to hear some more generally about historical medicines and healing techniques too... another thread, perhaps?)
