i had a thought earlier whilst trying to avoid working.
i currently have copies of some rarer books, essasy and journals that would possibly be of interest to some other site users.
so, what do you thinkof the idea of somehow setting up a lending library of sorts? im thinking it could be as simple as each member willing to lend books out posts a list of what they are willing to lend. prospecctive lenders then PM them and between the two parties they arrange a way of getting the goods back and forth. perhaps the lendee sends an SAE.
whats do people think of the possibilty of this?
how about suggestions on how it will work?

It seems a lovely idea, but I know I wouldn't want to be part of a lending library - lending books to people can cause huge rows. I've lent a rare book to someone before and had it ruined, and I never borrow books from anyone that can't be replaced through Amazon either, just in case something happens to them. I'm very careful with books, but there's always a risk of some one-off accident occurring with someone elses, and if it was irreplaceable I'd feel awful.

I was once lent an extremely rare grimoire to copy by hand, for a specific period, on nothing more than their trust for my honour. To repace this book would have cost me upwards of £1500, if you could actually find one in the first place. Bear in mind that this book contained a personal message from the author (now passed over) to the owner, it was essentially irreplaceable.
I can honestly say I couldn't bring myself to do the same for someone else.

i agree with you on this one.
its a difficult one. whereas i encourage people to ge hold of some of the good books and essays i have, when they cant get them as they are rare or obscure the only thing is to lend them out.
thats why i thought the library could be a way to exchnge this info and spread the kowledge so to speak.

Hi Lee
I'd be happy to be involved in this. I'm not sure I've much that would be considered rare or hard to get though?
As a sort of 'academic' I have access to many journals and would be happy to chase up the odd hard to get reference for people here.

It's a good idea, but only if it's cheap books that are easy to replace. if I had to send books it would take a lot of time, because the queue at the local post office usually goes out the door, sign of the times I suppose.

We've discussed this vaguely in the past. It's a great idea, but I think it would work better from within the Brython banner, so that it was happening within a more private space on the web. However, I've got no problem at all with people requesting books/articles here or with folk offering to lend - but (with official hat on) if it happens, it's between lender and borrower and not any of Caer Feddwyd/my responsibility Obviously, please make sure that anything photocopied and distributed is not in copyright. Anything out of copyright, pass it to me and I'll stick it on the site! ;D Another good idea is to ask folks to look up specific references in books - this can be dead useful if you are researching an article and literally just need a few paragraphs from a work that you don't have. It's probably easier to make a specific request for that, rather than us all posting up vast lists of the books we've got.
