The Dindseachaí or lore of names and places, found in OI literature are essentially stories and sagas that pin into place the meaning of various places in ireland, usually linking seats of power with gods, heroes and political factions....telling picaresque stories that explain the names and importance of places.
Does welsh have an equivalent? or do any of the welsh tales even as an aside mention that such and such is why this place got named, anything like that? Cheers beirn

Does welsh have an equivalent? or do any of the welsh tales even as an aside mention that such and such is why this place got named, anything like that? Yes. The four branches of 'Y Mabinogi' and the tale 'Culhwch and Olwen' are full of specific place references which are still identifiable today, and there are many 'onamistic' rererences, claiming the origin of a Place name in an event described, such as Llanrhaidr ym Mochnant where 'Mochnant' (Pig Stream) is said to refer the place where Gwydion rested with Pryderi's pigs while escaping with them to Gwynedd.
