Attempts are being made to buy the land on which the Giants Quoit sits, at SW 6500 3720 in Cornwall. Plans are to use the 5-acre site as an environmental educational resource, with tree planting as wildlife encouragement. The Giant's Quoit is a ruined Bronze Age dolmen. And they want to reconstruct it "to it's former glory" I see.
Does this mean they will erect it and then cover it with a mound, or are they going for the Victorian romantic ruin style?
Although I applaud people who want to preserve our heritage I do get a little nervous when the word 'reconstruction' gets bandied about.

Although I applaud people who want to preserve our heritage I do get a little nervous when the word 'reconstruction' gets bandied about. As a 're-constructionist' I say "'handbags at dawn, sah!" I know what you mean. What are they re-constructing to, what is the evidence, what will they do with it when it's re-constructed. But I think of Pembroke castle which was ruined but was very well re-constructed and now is probably just about hte most impressive castle I can think of becasue you get a very good idea of what it must have been like whilst in use. But the biggest point for me is should we be re-building things that have gone before, or building or own? If I had the chance with land and finances I would build new.

Well actually, I would build new but it would very much be of an earlier style. It would depend a lot on the nature of the land I had available. If I had marshland, I would build a track and platform to the middle of it, with a pool to deposit in. If I had forest, I would build the traditional iron age shrine. Somewhere else, I would build a Romano-British ambulatory-style temple. If I had a hill, I would build an enclosure with a suitable shrine on top. I quite like the idea of a large public roundhouse with satellite roundhouses forming a 'community'. Oh, and sky-platforms for excarnation.

I suppose I asked as I'm blessed and cursed with land and stone . Since Arth first talked about his plans for a forest shrine I have to admit I've been thinking about this, but I'm still not wholly sure what I think it would mean or really acheive - and as you know I'm 'Ferally' wary of the risk of theatrics I suppose I have been more thinking about something on pasture or meadow rather than in forest. Is this something you might be interested in discussing the possibilities of further? Stephen

Why no start with a friends' cairn Francis? Every friend who visits is asked to bring a stone from their own landscape...

Something like "look what i have made aren't I wonderful? see I'm more spiritual than you". I can not see you doing that Stephen, if you keep it to just friends and family where's the problem? Do what you want to do and see what happens.

I already bring a small stone back from places I've been that I like, but these are spread around in spots that feel right for them. A friends cairn is a great idea. Now if I can just get someone to bring one from the Mawddach to get it started

It's only theatrics if you start telling every tom, dick and harry what you have made. Hi Arth It's more the going down the path of theatrics to myself that I wasn to be careful to avoid. I guess different people respond to 'pharaphenalia' in different ways. I suspect I'm the sort that might lose sight of the purpose, or the focus, if I ever got hung up on the "set, costumes and props". I fully accept that for different personality types to myself these are important tools (Although obviously there are plenty of muppets who just want to play at dressing up fantasies as well ). When I was very young (10ish) I thought I was into fishing, but I came to realise I just liked collecting all the pretty coloured floats- and going through the motions of fishing gave me a sort of purpose for them. So I'm not casting judgement on all others over potential for theatrics just on myself
