My younger brother get's married in ten days and has asked me to write/read a poem at the ceremony. What do people think of this?
Take My Hand.
Take my hand the husband said,
And be sure to hold it tight,
Place your head here in my lap,
Let me guide you through the night.
For we must take an ancient path,
Through the dreaming lover’s gate.
And walk quickly through the dark,
For the dawn will just not wait.
The land ahead holds many paths,
Some lead to grief or beauty.
But I would show you just these three,
Those to honour, love and duty.
In recent times they’ve become quite lost,
Overgrown with man’s great pride.
But some still walk them here and there,
So they have never died.
The path of honour wends about your soul,
Strips away your masks and conceit.
It tramples down your arrogance,
And selfishness it will defeat.
With honour you will walk tall,
Friendship shall be your reward.
Your open hand will be renowned
And liars fall before your sword.
The path of duty is a briar patch,
It’s the hardest path of all.
It’ll break your back and make you cry,
And load you till you fall.
But then it will raise you up again,
And your courage it will stir.
Your kith and kin will know they’re safe,
As you’ll always be there.
The path of love is a sweet trap,
Lined with pain and happiness,
How great can you each become,
Without making either less?
And through the years you will find,
That river deepens as it flows,
Such bliss is found in fidelity,
As your true love grows.
So hearken all you sons of Adam,
And you fine daughters of Eve,
Through Honour, Love and Duty,
A great marriage you can achieve.
