I've always been more of a book person than a film person, so every time I get an email from the DVD rental place telling me to add more titles to my list I end up spending hours looking for things by keyword, and invariably add a lot of tripe I'd have preferred not to waste my time watching to my list ... so, I thought I'd ask ... What films would you recommend? What are your "must see" films, and what makes them worth watching in your opinion? One of these days I intend to sit down, open my Haagen Dazs and not feel cheated

The Thirteenth Warrior - real Norse stuff and not a christian in sight ;D Antonio Banderas is actually bearable as a confused Arab Emissary being pushed into joining a band of Norse Warriors on a deadly quest. The use of mostly swedish actors and the clear understanding of the age by the scriptwriters and director make the whole film a treat.

Sounds great, and it should fulfil my other half's mandate of "nothing with Cameron bloody Diaz" too. Thanks Craig ;D

Basically a re-write Beowulf but none the worse for it.

For crying outr loud don't watch 300! I want that two hours of my life back. What a load of bovine excrement.
Otehrs to avoid like the plague: U-571 (US steals royal navy's laurels) The Patriot (German Director shows British soldiers committing a Nazi war crime) and basically anything else by Mel Gibson. Boudicca Warrior queen (starring Alex Kingston) in the words of Dan Shadrake: "Kingston's a great actress but you can't polish a turd"

What I liked about Arthur was the depiction of early Christianity and the various 'pagan' beliefs. The extended version on DVD has more about Pelagius and makes sense of some of Clive Owen's dialogue in the early part of the film.
And, of course, who can forget Ray Winstone playing 'the Daddy' - again? ;D

I definitely enjoyed it, not as much as some films in a similar vein but then I wasn't paying as much attention as I normally would (we went to watch it as a distraction on a very stressful day, which is never the best circumstances to enjoy anything!) so that may not be the fault of the film. I did come out of the cinema declaring that I wanted to be a Spartan though, so I must have got caught up in it a little at least

Spirited away is fantastic I also like My Neighbour Totoro - immensely cute and with a good polytheist outlook. I love the spirits of the forest and the little soot creatures Speaking of Arthuriana, don't forget the old John Boorman film Excalibur. Stunning stuff, dark and gritty.

Well, Hogfather is now available on DVD! I love the Studio Ghibli productions, such as Spirited Away, My Neighbour Tortoro, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, and I hope, one day, to own them all on DVD. I also enjoyed Chocolat, which has a very subtle pagan theme to it and features Johnny Depp . Excalibur is great and I re-watch it from time to time, same as King Arthur.

I recorded Hogfather the night it was first shown I've added a few of those to my watchlist, thanks for recommending them. There's lots I can watch with Dylan too, which is great. We have a long standing tradition of pizza and DVD evenings and it'd be nice to have something other than Disney ;D

Ooh and I almost forgot (even though it was on the tv box a few months back), " Sword of Xantan") based on the Germanic myth "Das Nibelungenlied" and the Nordic "Volsunga Saga"?

That looks interesting, was it really the inspiration for LOTR?
