As I understand it, Tolkien studied the northern myths and languages and used them an inspiration for his work; certainly there are similarities in the languages of Middle Earth and those of some obscure northern cultures.

Tolkien was a professor of languages at Oxford. He based Sindarin and Quenya on Finnish and Welsh apparently.

There are definitely Celtic/Brythonic influences in his work, I remember noticing them as a child when I had my nose in the myths. The similarity between Sauron and Balor is an obvious one ... and of course, there's Beowulf.

Sword of Xanten was ace ;D
Completely cheesy, but with a very nice looking cast and great costumes...

We have all of the Miyazaki - Princess Mononoke will blow you away, its main themes is the intrusion of industiralisation into a land that is still rulled by gods. There are some cute tree spirits called kodama.
Firinne - if you haven't seen Totoro you must. Dylan will love it too. Caitlin is 15 and it is still the thing we watch to de-stress.

Do you think Ally would like it (she's 8 now but a little sensitive - Doctor Who gives her nightmares)

I think she would love it. It's not scary... lots of spirits, but they are all infeasibly cute The only one I haven't seen is the new Earthsea film, done by his son. I've heard it's not a patch on the others though... I don't have Sky Movies... or actually any telly at all. Let me know if it's worth buying the DVD.

I don't have the Earthsea, I don't think its out yet but I have recently reread the original trilogy and the wonderful sequels that came out a couple of years ago. Wonderful. Hope the anime doesn't mangle it as much as the TV series did.
Brochfael - Ally will love Totoro, just wait until you see the Cat Bus!

On about Beowulf - what happened to the film version that was being made? It was made, but they failed to get a distributor for the UK. There were one-off viewings on two occasions (I think) here in the UK, but not much else. At one point, it was available for download off the net, but I'm not sure if that is still possible. I don't have Sky Movies... or actually any telly at all. Let me know if it's worth buying the DVD. If you are referring to the DVD of Grendel, I don't believe its available, yet. I check with Blockbuster every week.

I thought you couldn't play foreign DVDs on UK machines? (Be great if that turns out not to be true!)

Don't you just hate the hype then find out it's a turkey.

Grendel isn't so much a turkey as the bastard child of Bernard Matthews mutant turkey monster.
