I think it's time to start talking about the where and when of the next Brython gathering. This may seem over enthusiatic to some but I want something I can look forward to The last two have been in Wales at Stephen's and I must admit to developing quite a soft spot for the area but there are other possible locations. Arth has offered his forest several times in the past, RedRaven had options for things round his area and on the train back home last year Lee and I wondered if a visit to the Vale of Uffington might be a good idea. Timing wise late spring into summer seems to be good but that also depends on where we go. So what do you all think?

Arth has offered his forest several times in the past, I second Arths forest if the offers still there. I can assure you, morgans wood would be just perfect & is much more accessible for most folk.

By great coincidence I was thinking yesterday of posting about us organising another gathering - setting a date as early as possible gives the best chance for folk to avoid double bookings.
I've wanted to see Arth's woods for a long time now, but am also keen to hear RR's insights on his post-industrial landscape in the place itself. So I'd be happy either way, which I appreciate doesn't help the actual deciding!
Of course I'd love to see all or any of you here in Wales again this summer. If anyone ever feels the need for a time in the woods, or just an undisturbed time out in the fields then please let me know (either as some sort of 'retreat' of just a holiday).

We'd better make sure he's still willing to host first

he might be a little occupied for the next few days as he is handling the funeral of his mum.
i think it best to leave this be for a week or so till he drops in next.

My calender is filling up fast. To save mucking everyone around it might be better if someone else hosts the Brython gathering. At least that way a date can be agreed.

That's a real shame Arth as I was looking forward to visiting your woods at last but these things happen Last year Lee and I did talk vaguely about the possibility of going down to Uffington for a Brython gathering at Calan Mai but not sure if that's really feasible this year. I aim to get there sometime in the next year or two though Other suggestions?

Not sure it it's still there, but there used to be a great campsite pretty much at the foot of the Uffington Horse. The owner allowed fires too! However, it was a small field and did get very busy over weekends.

this sounds like the site: www.thehappycampers.co.uk/campsitedetails/28/as Potia said, we discussed on the north wales express superhighway train (!) after last meeting up about maybe us organising the next meeting. so, i think it is the opportune time to perhaps move on with this idea? perhaps we should maybe begin with a date? May13/14/15 or may 20/21/22 assuming a fri and sat night stay over. i really cant do earlier in the month as it looks like i will be moving house or at least moving the last of it the first weekend that is the 1st of may. once we have a date i will get in touch and see about booking us some space. oh and it seems cost will be £14 each for the two night (showers included!!!!) and real loos so no need for a last chance drop off in town before setting off

I'd have problems getting there at any reasonable time of evening on a Friday unless it's a public holiday as well in which case I might be able to get away earlier. I don't think I'd be able to leave Glasgow til about 7pm at the earliest on either of those weekends and it's a long journey. Not even sure how best to do it even.

As astronomical as the odds are against it I think I've stayed on that campsite a few years a go - I've been checking with the friends I went with since Lee put the link up. I'm not sure when BB last stayed there but we had a rubbish time - charged eight pounds ago for fresh wet wood you could hardly burn and when you got it going loads of smoke and no heat and a very small bag of wood at that. We got a row for using the rest of our BBQ charcoal to try and help the fire - they have a very strict rule of only burning wood they sell you on your fires...
Another thought I had, and cheaper (can't get cheaper than free!), is to walk the first part of The Ridgeway from Avebury. I don't mean a big walk just take in some of the sites (hill forts, carved horses, circles, Silbury hill, Wayland's smithy etc.) You are allowed to pitch tents on The Ridgeway itself as long as they're not left up in the day. It's pretty much a level walk and I'm only talking about a very slow short amble.

I used to walk regularly on the Ridgeway when some friends of mine lived in a village near the White Horse. Then they moved to Wales so I see them even more often, but haven't been to the Ridgeway for ages. So renewing that experience would be good.
Much as the idea of free camping on the Ridgeway itself appeals, I think this would have to be thought through carefully. I didn't know you could camp on the Ridgeway itself, but presumably tents would have to be taken down early. Can we light a fire ? And where would we be based - Is there somewhere in Avebury where cars etc can be left? If I remember rightly Avebury to Wayland's Smithy is some distance.
Perhaps we need to think of having some interactive time too.
